Cadence in the Shadows
The bass from the main arena rehearsal had finally stopped vibrating through the concrete floors of the NSCI Dome, leaving behind a heavy, breathless quiet. Backstage, the labyrinth of temporary dressing rooms was a graveyard of discarded garment bags, empty coffee cups, and hurried technicians packing up gear. In the farthest, dimly lit corner of the corridor, past the buzzing vending machines and out of the orbit of the frantic floor managers, sat Dressing Room 4B.

Inside, the world slowed down to the cadence of a metronome.

Rohit stood in front of the tall vanity mirror, his fingers mechanically working at the tiny crystal buttons of his emerald-green velvet blazer. His reflection stared back at him, eyes dark, tracing the exhaustion that clung to his jawline. But it wasn’t physical fatigue making his chest rise and fall in shallow, uneven rhythm. It was the phantom weight of a hand that had rested between his shoulder blades twenty minutes ago on the main stage.

The door clicked open, and the mirror caught the movement first. Aditya stepped inside, closing the door with a soft, deliberate click that sealed them away from the noise of the rest of the world.

Aditya didn’t turn on the overhead lights. He left the room illuminated only by the warm, amber glow of the vanity bulbs and the pale sliver of moonlight cutting through the high window. He was still dressed in his rehearsal blacks—a sheer silk shirt unbuttoned dangerously low at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with tension.

"You disappeared," Aditya said, his voice a low, raspy baritone that seemed to wrap around the small space, thickening the air instantly.

Rohit didn’t turn around immediately. He watched Aditya in the mirror, his breath hitching as Aditya stepped closer, closing the distance between them with predatory, unhurried grace. Every instinct in Rohit’s body—every nerve ending he had spent the last three hours trying to numb—flared back to life, buzzing with a static charge so intense it made his skin prickle.

"I needed air," Rohit murmured, his voice sounding entirely too thin, too fragile. "The stage was... crowded."

"Crowded," Aditya repeated, a faint, knowing shadow of a smile touching the corner of his lips. He stopped just behind Rohit, invading his personal space with absolute confidence. In the mirror, their eyes locked. Aditya’s gaze was heavy, hooded, carrying the weight of unspoken months—years, maybe—of longing that they had both carefully disguised behind public smiles, polite interviews, and casual industry banter.

Aditya’s hands rose slowly, hovering for a fraction of a second over Rohit’s shoulders before they made contact.

Rohit closed his eyes. The touch was not an accident. It was deliberate, possessive, and warm enough to burn right through the velvet of the blazer. Aditya’s fingers settled precisely over the muscle at the top of Rohit’s shoulders, pressing in with a firm, grounding pressure that made Rohit’s knees feel instantly weak.

"You’re holding all your tension right here," Aditya whispered against the shell of Rohit’s ear. He had stepped in so close now that Rohit could feel the heat radiating from Aditya’s chest, could smell the heady mix of sandalwood, rain, and sheer, intoxicating masculinity.

"Aditya..." Rohit breathed out a warning, though it sounded more like a plea. A plea for him to stop, or perhaps, a plea for him to press harder.

"Don't," Aditya murmured, his thumb tracing a slow, agonizing circle against the tense knot of Rohit’s shoulder blade. "Don't tell me to step back. We both know you don't want that."

Rohit’s eyes flew open, burning as they met Aditya’s in the glass. The intensity in Aditya’s dark eyes was staggering—a quiet storm of a hunger that had been starved of oxygen for far too long.

Slowly, deliberately, Aditya turned Rohit around by the shoulders until Rohit was facing him, trapped between the edge of the vanity table and Aditya’s solid, immovable frame. The space between them vanished. Rohit had to tilt his chin up just to maintain eye contact, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Aditya didn't rush. He never rushed. He possessed the terrifying patience of a man who knew time was on his side. One of his hands slid up from Rohit’s shoulder, his knuckles brushing lightly against the side of Rohit’s neck, trailing a fiery path upward until his thumb rested just under Rohit’s jaw, right over the frantic, erratic pulse beating against the skin.

"Look at me," Aditya commanded softly.

Rohit looked. He couldn't look away if his life depended on it. He was drowning in the dark depths of Aditya’s gaze, completely undone by the raw, unguarded yearning written across Aditya’s face. The famous, charismatic Aditya Roy Kapoor—the man who could command stadiums with a single smile—looked entirely unraveled, and he was unraveled entirely because of him.

"You’ve been avoiding me all week," Aditya whispered, his thumb stroking the sensitive skin of Rohit's jawline. The friction was maddeningly gentle, a slow-burn torture that sent shivers racing down Rohit’s spine. "Every time I look across the room, you find somewhere else to be. Why, Rohit?"

"We're in public," Rohit managed to whisper, his voice trembling slightly. "Even here... someone could walk in. The crew—"

"The door is locked," Aditya interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, becoming rougher, steeped in a dark, velvet intimacy. "And no one dares come down this hall right now. I made sure of that."

Rohit’s breath caught. "You planned this."

"I’ve been planning this since the moment I saw you walk into the script-reading on Monday," Aditya confessed, his honesty striking Rohit like a physical blow. There was no deflection, no charming evasion. Just raw, naked truth hanging in the dim air between them. "I’m tired of pretending we’re just colleagues, Rohit. I’m tired of watching you from across a crowded room, pretending your laugh isn't the only sound I listen for."

The confession echoed in the quiet dressing room, stripping away every defense Rohit had spent years constructing. A shiver racked Rohit’s frame, and he instinctively leaned into the heat of Aditya’s hand, craving more, needing more of the anchor Aditya was offering.

Sensing the shift, Aditya moved closer. His other hand came up, resting flat against the wall beside Rohit’s head, effectively caging him in. The proximity was intoxicating. They were breathing the same air, their chests almost brushing with every shallow, synchronised inhalation.

"You do things to me," Aditya whispered, his gaze dropping momentarily to Rohit’s lips before flashing back up to his eyes, burning with a fierce, quiet intensity. "Even when you're just standing there, not saying a word, pulling me toward you like gravity. How do you expect me to keep my distance?"

"I don't," Rohit whispered back, the confession slipping past his lips before he could stop it. The admission hung there, heavy and electric.

Aditya’s breath hitched. The mask slipped completely, revealing the deep, aching vulnerability beneath. His hand slid from Rohit’s jaw to cup the back of his neck, his fingers tangling softly in the short curls at the nape, holding him steady, anchoring him to the moment.

"Say it again," Aditya murmured, his forehead coming down to rest gently against Rohit’s. The contact was so intimate, so profoundly tender, that it made Rohit’s eyes sting with sudden, overwhelming emotion.

"I don't want you to keep your distance," Rohit repeated, his voice barely audible, a secret meant only for the shadows and the amber light.

Aditya let out a long, shuddering exhale, a sound of pure relief mingled with a rising tide of desperate longing. He didn't rush in for a clumsy, hurried collision. Instead, he closed his eyes, pressing his forehead tighter against Rohit’s, letting them share the same breath, the same erratic pulse.

Slowly, almost agonizingly slow, Aditya’s thumb traced the lower contour of Rohit’s lip. The touch was so light, so achingly tender, that Rohit parted his lips on a shaky inhalation, his hands instinctively coming up to grip the fabric of Aditya’s silk shirt, feeling the rock-solid muscles beneath tense under his touch.

"We have to go back out there soon," Aditya whispered against his lips, the proximity so close that their breath mingled, hot and sweet.

"I know," Rohit whispered back, his fingers tightening their grip on the silk, pulling Aditya just a fraction closer, surrendering entirely to the magnetic pull that had been drawing them together for months.

"Let them wait," Aditya murmured darkly, a low, captivating promise vibrating against Rohit’s mouth.

And in that quiet, shadowed corner of the dressing room, far away from the cameras, the flashing lights, and the roaring crowds, the world outside simply ceased to exist. There was only the heat of their breath, the lingering pressure of Aditya’s hand on his shoulder, and the sweet, agonizing promise of a slow burn finally catching fire.
